The Wolf is one of these creatures that can either be tamed or attack players, depending upon the whims of the DM.

Wolves are a pretty standard first encounter in DnD 5e. They only have one attack, but they can be deadly to low-level adventurers when outnumbered.

Their pack tactics can quickly knock out weaker characters if they surround them, and the DM should absolutely try to use this tactic when building Wolves into their encounter.

The wolf does not appear on any list of approved familiars within the rules of DnD 5e. If players wish to have a Wolf familiar, they would have to change the rules with their DM.
