Lightning Lure 5e Spell Description
The spell’s text from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything reads:
You create a lash of lightning energy that strikes at one creature of your choice that you can see within 15 feet of you. The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 10 feet in a straight line toward you and then take 1d8 lightning damage if it is within 5 feet of you.
At Higher Levels. This spell’s damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).
What is Lightning Lure?
Lightning Lure is an evocation cantrip. It takes one action to cast, is instantaneous, and only requires a verbal component.
When cast, the Artificer, Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard creates a lash of lightning that extends from the caster toward a target within 15 ft. The target must make an STR saving throw or be pulled up to 10ft in a straight line towards the caster.
If the target gets within 5ft of the caster, they take 1d8 lightning damage.
How can Lighting Lure be used?
Lightning Lure has a lot of potential uses, even though the spell initially does little damage. A magic user could use Lightning Lure to draw an archer from a low wall. They would sustain falling damage in addition to 1d8 lightning damage if they landed within 5 feet of the caster.
It is also possible to use Lightning Lure to drag a target into rough terrain. This spell would open them up to more ranged attacks and potentially extra damage. It would be satisfying to pull a charging guard down some stairs, potentially leaving them prone and striking them with lightning.
Lightning Lure can also help place an enemy where the party wants them. The spell text states that the caster can drag a target up to 10ft. The caster doesn’t necessarily need to pull the target for the total 10ft.
If a target is within 15ft but just out of the fighter’s melee reach, the caster could quickly solve this problem while throwing some extra lighting in there for good measure.
Is Lighting Lure a good spell?
Lightning Lure’s value is often overlooked. As a cantrip, the caster can cast the spell almost anytime, maximizing its utility. A caster would still have plenty of slots for more powerful spells. This spell has more uses in and out of battle other than just causing damage.
