5 Games Like Secret Hitler
This political party game is fun for any gathering!
In Secret Hitler, you are either a liberal or fascist working to promote your group’s agenda. Players vote to see if they trust the President and Chancellor of that round. If the vote is successful, the two leaders either pass a liberal or a fascist agenda. However, there is an element of luck involved with the agenda cards.
So was it luck that pushed the fascists forward? Or is the Secret Hitler to blame?
Secret Hitler requires you to use deception and detective skills to either fool players or find the fascist among you. Bluffing and communication are essential.

#1. The Resistance: Avalon
Players: 5-10
Playing time: 30 minutes
The Resistance: Avalon takes place in a mystical British setting. The future of the kingdom is at risk from evil forces taking over. To secure the king’s people, players must identify and eradicate the minions from their midst.
The story sets the scene, but the mechanics and player interaction steal the show. The Resistance has very similar gameplay to Secret Hitler. Players are dealt character cards detailing who they are – with some special abilities in the Avalon edition.
Players are chosen and secretly vote to advance or sabotage the good guys’ missions. If enough missions succeed, innocence prevails.
Like Secret Hitler, the Resistance is excellent for groups, and political debate is encouraged. So don’t be scared to stand up for yourself – or throw that friend under the bus, if necessary!
#2. Deception: Murder in Hong Kong
Players: 4-12
Playing time: 20 minutes
Beware! There’s been a murder in the bustling city of Hong Kong. Players take on different roles in this scenario to get to the bottom of it.
The roles include Investigators, a Murderer, Accomplice, and a Forensic Scientist. The cards and character roles are a bit more involved, but the game is still straightforward to learn.
The secret Murderer chooses how the crime will go down. The Investigators must uncover the details in the allotted time. The Forensic Scientist has all the facts and must assist Investigators with hints – without giving too much away.
Players get to debate, but they also get 30 seconds each to state their opinions and suspicions. Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is another favorite for those looking for a quick choice to get partygoers chatting and having fun.
#3. One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Players: 3-10
Playing time: 10 minutes
This social deduction game of werewolves and villagers gets an unexpected twist!
One Night Ultimate Werewolf has the same foundation as the original but with different character abilities that switch up the dynamic. You are only allowed to look at your card once. However, the Robber or Troublemaker may swap cards in the middle of the night. The Drunk swaps with one card in the center but isn’t allowed to look at it.
Are you an upstanding citizen or a threatening werewolf? You may not even know!
This game also includes role-playing, conversing, and bluffing. However, some card switches and sneaky plays add luck and unpredictability.

#4. Sheriff of Nottingham (Second Edition)
Players: 3-6
Playing time: 60 minutes
In this corrupt economy, merchants must make as much money as possible by transporting goods into town. They can play honorably, bringing in what they claim. Or bluff their way past the officer with some contraband in hand.
Players take turns being the Sheriff of Nottingham. Decide if you trust or doubt your merchant’s words. But be careful – false accusations come with a price.
The theme of this card game is quite different. Unlike Secret Hitler, all players share the same two character roles, and winning is based on points. However, the social elements of bluffing and reading your opponents are crucial.
#5. Coup
Players: 2-6
Playing time: 15 minutes
It’s everyone for themselves in this political card game. Like Secret Hitler, Coup involves lying, calling bluffs, and suffering the consequences of incorrect judgments.
There are no cooperative elements in Coup. Instead, you start with two influence cards and two coins. On your turn, you can choose to take a coin, get two coins as Foreign Aid, or stage a coup against an opponent. Influence cards have special abilities and can block specific actions.
If you don’t have that particular card…who’s to know? Put on that poker face and try to outsmart your opponents. If you’re caught, you lose an influence card. If you succeed in a Coup, you can take another player down.
