Work is over. It’s beer o’clock and time to get the drinks in. So, what are you going to order? A crisp, fresh lager? Or maybe a strong hoppy IPA. Find out what’s on the menu with Brew Dice.

Brew Dice is all about the beers. Well, more specifically, it’s about winning beers. If you roll the right dice you win the beer on offer. Win five beers and you win the game. Let’s dive into our quick Brew Dice review.

Brief Overview of Brew Dice

Brew Dice is a high-speed, high-intensity dice rolling, pattern-building game that will have you scrambling to win the most beer on the table. To earn the beer you also need to match the right snack and the right coaster. All the information is on the card and you just need your dice to come up lucky.

Brew Dice is really easy and really fast. It takes 2 minutes to learn and all of 10 intense, energetic minutes to play. Up to four players can join in, and for this one, the more the merrier is definitely recommended.

Unboxing Brew Dice

Simplicity is key in Brew Dice so there is not much to unbox. The box includes:

  • One-page instruction book.
  • 20 cards
  • 12 color-coded dice

The instruction book is short and sweet. It’s very easy to read and all the info you need is on one page.

Each card features a picture of a unique beverage. The aesthetics are great as each drink is clearly identifiable and totally unique. These drinks are real craft beers from all around the US, so they’re very authentic and will appeal to beer lovers.

The dice are specifically made for Brew Dice and have symbols instead of numbers. They are nice and chunky, and the sides are engraved so you don’t have to worry about the pictures rubbing off from using them too much.

How to Play Brew Dice

The mechanics of Brew Dice are exceedingly easy and revolve around matching your dice to the card in play.

The Cards

There are 20 unique cards in the deck. Each card includes 3 clearly visible bits of information. First up is the beer itself. This can be a glass, can, or bottle. Next is the type of coaster the beer is served on. This can be round, square, or star. Finally is the snack the beer is served with. This can be pretzels, peanuts, or popcorn.

The Dice

There are 4 sets of color-coded dice (red, green, yellow, and blue). Each set consists of three dice, one for the beer, one for the coaster, and one for the snack.

The Setup

All 20 cards are shuffled and placed face down. Each player chooses a set of dice. There are 12 dice in total so up to 4 players can join. And that’s it. It is really that simple.

The Game

It doesn’t matter who starts, so that’s up to you. The first player flips the card on top of the deck and places it face-up beside the deck. Everyone can see what beer, coaster, and snack they need to match with their dice.

Now the race is on. Every player rolls all three of their dice simultaneously and tries to match them with the card. Speed and reflexes are essential. Roll quickly and roll often. Once one of your dice matches with the card, set that die aside. Once you match all three dice with the card, grab the card and show everyone. You have won the round and that card is yours.

The next round begins with the winner of the previous round flipping the next card. Everyone rolls all their dice again until someone wins the round. The first player with 5 cards wins.

If you roll all three dice correctly on your first turn you can steal a card from another player. If no one has a card yet, take one from the top of the deck.

If someone declares victory in a round but it turns out they were mistaken, that card goes to the bottom of the deck and the offending player is out of the next round.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Perfect bar/drinking game.
  • Very quick and interactive
  • Great for beer lovers

This game is perfect if you’re in a bar or having drinks with a few friends and want something easy to play that everyone can understand. You can be a little tipsy already and not get lost in the convolutions of complex strategy.

The game is also great for those who want a quick, interactive game. It takes all of 10 minutes and then you can either rinse and repeat or move on with your life.

The choice is yours but you don’t have to commit to hours of play with no end in sight. Plus it’s always your go. You are constantly rolling dice trying to match with the card on display so there’s no downtime at all.

All the beers included in the game are authentic beers so if you’re a bonafide beer connoisseur you’ll recognize some awesome craft beers from around the US. It can even give you some suggestions if you’re looking for a new taste.

Cons:

  • Restrictive player count
  • For ages 21+
  • Very repetitive

You’re basically limited by the number of dice and cards. More than four people could definitely play, and the game is suited for big groups. But you only have 4 sets of dice so 4 is the max that can join in. In theory, you could combine two boxes and expand to 8 players.

The only reason the game is for over 21s is that beer is featured on the cards. The rules and the mechanics would really appeal to younger players. If beer were substituted for another non-alcoholic beverage, this game would be suitable for all ages.

There isn’t much variation from game to game. It only includes 20 cards so you’ll become very familiar with them quickly. Plus it’s really all about the luck of the dice. Speed is the only real skill that will help you here and strategy is basically non-existent. It can feel very repetitive very quickly.

Conclusion: Verdict?

I really like this game in certain settings. If you find yourself in a scenario where you want to play a game that is quick and easy, has a cool concept, and you don’t want to play for hours, then it’s perfect. I really like the quick-fire real-time nature of the game. It is always your turn so there’s no downtime. And that is really appealing.

But if you’re looking for a game that requires strategy and depth, then this is definitely not it. The repetitive nature of the game, as well as the limited number of players, could definitely put some people off.

I think it’s totally worth trying the game out because it’s a really fun filler that everyone can understand and enjoy. But it all depends on your expectations.
