Race to the Treasure!

Race to the Treasure Board Game Box and Board

Players: 1-4
Playing time: 20mins

Race to the Treasure! is exactly that! It is a cooperative tile-placement game where players rush to beat the ogre to the beloved treasure.

Work together collecting tiles and strategizing the best path to reach the three keys needed to open the treasure chest before the ogre can. Each tile flipped could lead players — or the ogre — closer to the prize, so plan carefully.

What we liked

Because there is no reading involved and the rules are simple, this game is great for kindergartners and even their younger friends will be able to play along. It is a fantastic game for building social skills and team building.

With a quick playtime, you can play it, ogre and ogre, again!

What could be better

This game really needs 3 players to work well. With 2 players, it’s pretty dull and with 4 players, you can really just focus on the path-building and planning aspects.

Hoot Owl Hoot!

Hoot Owl Hoot Board Game Box and Board

Players: 2-4
Playing time: 15mins

Night owls, it’s time to fly home! Adventurous owls went exploring in the forest during the night, and now they need your help to return to their nest before morning.

Players will move around the track in a colorful fashion trying to reach their nest as each sun card drawn brings them closer to daylight. Don’t let your cute, feathered friends fall too far behind you. All the owls need to return safely home in order for you to win the game. No owl left behind.

What we liked

This adorable animal-themed game teaches kids to be inclusive and to share. It will get your wise little owls thinking strategically, working together, and planning ahead. This game will be a hoot on your next classroom game day.

What could be better

I’m not a fan of the card system in this game. The Sun cards in particular are frustrating, due to all of the missed turns.

ICECOOL / ICECOOL 2

Players: 2-4
Playing time: 30mins

These penguins are trying to focus in class, but they’re too hungry! If only they could get their flippers on some tasty fish to hold them over until lunch. Aha! An idea!

These mischief-making penguins made a bold decision to cut class in search of fish, but they forgot one thing — the hall monitor!

Now the penguins are running through the school, trying not to be caught by the hall monitor. Catch fish by flicking your penguin through a doorway with a fish above it (no animals were harmed in the making of this game). These fish will earn you points at the end.

All players will have their turn being the hall monitor. While class skippers are busy being sneaky and trying to catch fish, the hall monitor will try to strike the runners and take their student IDs.

The jig is up when the hall monitor gets all ID cards or all three fish have been caught by a player. Will the rascals get away with their ploy or will the hall monitor get a whiff of something fishy?

What we liked

Both of the ICECOOL games are fantastic dexterity games for players of any age. The rules are super easy to learn and the short playing time makes them great for any family gathering.

What could be better

ICECOOL really plays best with 4 players. If you have fewer, it can miss the mark in my opinion. There’s not much to the game, so the simplicity might be a detractor for some players.

Outfoxed!

Outfoxed board game box and components

Players: 2-4
Playing time: 20mins

Sly as a fox! If you want to find out who stole Mrs. Plumpert’s famous pie, you’ll need to channel your inner Sherlock Holmes and get to work!

Play detective as you move around the board collecting clues and evidence. Investigators must work together using deduction skills to reveal suspects or dig deeper for more clues.

Does your suspect wear glasses? A scarf? Eliminate suspects one by one to find the guilty culprit. Remember, time is working against you and you don’t want the fox to high-tail it out of town!

What we liked

Outfoxed! is a great gateway game for kids and gets them to use logic and reasoning skills. They can work cooperatively and build confidence by cracking the mystery. Kids will be laughing and having fun all the while.

What could be better

This one won’t be as much fun for the adults in the room. The roll-and-move mechanic is pretty pointless and the designers could have done more with the deduction aspects.

Dinosaur Escape

Dinosaur Escape Game Box and Board

Players: 2-4
Playing time: 20mins

Feel the tremors of the earth below you as this volcano gets ready to blow! Help these lost dinosaurs find their way to the safety of Dinosaur Island before the volcano erupts!

Using memory and strategy, kids will work to save these dinosaurs before it’s too late. Move around the board and flip fern tokens to match dinosaur pieces and habitats. Help your fellow players remember which pieces have been turned to make sure these dinosaurs stay safe.

Oh, and if you see a T-Rex… RUN! With a little luck and skill, all the dinosaurs will get out before any disasters occur.

What we liked

Kids will love the colorful game which comes complete with a 3-D volcano and miniature dinosaur pieces. This game will test their memory while also encouraging teamwork and even basic counting skills. With no reading needed, this can be played by even your littlest dinos.

What could be better

There’s a bit too much randomness inherent in this game and if you roll too many “volcanoes” before your dinos get to safety, it can be devastating for the little ones.

Story Time Chess

Story Time Chess Board Game Box and Components

Players: 2
Playing time: 10mins

Yeah, it’s important for kids to play sports and all, but it’s also important for them to exercise their minds. What better way to do that than to learn chess?

Story Time Chess is a revolutionary game that teaches kids how to play chess using silly stories, vibrant pictures, and custom chess pieces. Chess will come alive in the imaginatively designed storybook that uses funny stories to teach kids about each piece and its rules.

Each story comes with its own mini-game and once all mini-games have been completed, kids will be able to play a full game of chess. Chess pieces come with individual character cutouts to help kids visualize the stories as they play. Story Time Chess is a fun, effective way to teach your kids chess.

What we liked

If you’re looking for a game that improves memory, promotes creativity, deepens focus, encourages strategic thinking, and can raise IQ scores, look no further.

There’s no denying chess is wonderful for the brain. And with this entertaining way of learning, it can be accessible to all. Even those with no chess training whatsoever!

What could be better

The stories could have been written better with some serious editing needed in the text. I found a lot of typos in the stories.

Ticket to Ride: First Journey

Ticket to Ride: First Journey Board Game Box and Board

Players: 2-4
Playing time: 15-30mins

Ticket to Ride: First Journey is just like the original, but adapted for younger players. This version may have a new map and simpler rules, but it’s retained all the fun of Ticket to Ride!

Players will take a cross-country trip as they collect train and locomotive cards, claim routes, and connect cities. Routes in this game will be a bit shorter, but you will still be rewarded as you connect them. Bonus to anyone clever enough to claim a coast-to-coast route. The first player to fulfill six tickets wins the game!

What we liked

This game is fast-paced and simple, yet kids will still need to make a strategic plan. Trains are a pretty popular theme for kindergartners, so this is a fun way to teach geography in the classroom.

Plus, Ticket to Ride is a classic and kids will be happy to hop aboard this game again and again.

What could be better

Although a great introduction to the Ticket to Ride series, this one does feel a bit cramped. It’s easier to cut off players here, even in a 3-player-game, which could be frustrating for kindergartners.

SET Junior

Players: 2-4
Playing time: 15mins

Set Junior is a fast-paced game that will sharpen your kindergartener’s cognitive and visual processing skills. The game is two-sided, so kids can practice the concept of making matching sets before moving on to the more challenging game.

In both games, when making a set there’s one rule: each set must have one commonality, while all other factors are different. For example, all pieces can be purple, but they all must be different numbers and different shapes.

On the second side, players take this a step further by racing to find sets within the constantly-changing board. What’s great is that there’s always more than one way to make a set.

What we liked

Teachers will love the educational value of this game as kids practice using numbers, colors, shapes, and patterns and learn to make sets. It’s a great way to introduce new math vocabulary too!

The game is simple to learn and has endless replay value. The two-sided board allows the game to grow with your students and it will continue to challenge them, time and time again.

What could be better

SET Junior is definitely more of a challenge for young kids than it is for adults, leading to an unbalanced game when playing with families. Also, little ones often just yell, “Set!” whenever they lay down the tiles which may lead to arguments as to who was first.

Wildcraft!

Wildcraft An Herbal Adventure Game Box and components

Players: 1-4
Playing time: 45-60mins

Spark curiosity as you venture through the mountains and various ecosystems, stumbling upon extraordinary herbs and plants you’ve never seen before. In Wildcraft! kids will learn how to identify plants and cure specific ailments they acquire along the way.

On your journey, you’ll face illnesses like mosquito bites, fever, sunburn, and blisters. Luckily, you’ll be surrounded by 27 different natural herbs with healing properties that you can use to heal yourself and your friends.

Although there will be hardships along the way, there will be plenty of fun. Slide down waterfalls and tiptoe over rickety logs as you take in the scenic trails while trying to make your way back home before dark.

What we liked

Kids will learn science, problem-solving skills, and get connected to nature in this game. Even very young kids will be able to play with pictures alone, so if your 5-year-old isn’t reading yet, they’ll still enjoy this adventure.

Plus, with such beautiful illustrations, the pictures will be what take your kids on this journey.

What could be better

While a good introduction to board games, it’s frustrating that there is no downside to failing to heal your wounds. If you ignore this component, nothing happens, making the herbs fairly pointless.

The Fairy Game

The Fairy Game art design featured image

Players: 2-4
Playing time: 15mins

“Winter is coming.” Oops, G-Rated games only here. Sorry! Actually, Mr. Winter is coming and he wants to freeze all the fairies’ beautiful flowers! Players will need to work together to protect the fairies’ precious garden!

The object of the game is to match fairy cards and add colored jewels to the magic wand before too many snowflakes land on any one flower. When a player collects 3 like fairy cards, they can collect a jewel for the wand and get one step closer to beating evil Mr. Winter.

Along the way, rainbow fairies and golden unicorns will come to help you win!

What we liked

The Fairy Game is a cute, vibrant game with a magical theme that teaches kids simple board game strategies, how to follow directions, as well as important social skills.

It’s another game that does not involve reading, so it’s great for 4-year-olds.

What could be better

The cardstock quality could have been better. After just a few shuffles, a few of the cards are bent and scuffed around the edges.

So, will Mr. Winter be able to ice over the fairy garden, or will your kindergartners leave him in the fairy dust?
