Board Games For 8 Players
Decrypto
Players: 3-8
Playing time: 15-45mins
Decrypto is a fun word party game that’ll boost your creativity and communication. You’ll be trying to transmit secret codes to your teammates without letting the opposing team intercept them.
To secretly transmit codes to teammates, you’ll need to brush up on your communication skills to assure that your teammate understands the code. However, at the same time, you want to make sure that it is too vague for the opposing team to figure out.
Decrypto comes with screens that’ll help decode your words as a player gives a clue about their words.
What we liked
This is definitely a top-tier word game. Decrypto is highly addictive. You’ll find yourselves playing round after round. Also, there’s no downtime between turns. Players are engaged at all times as they listen in to clues and attempt to guess each others’ code.
What could be better
I find Decrypto a bit tricky to teach to new players, but once they get it, everyone is hooked.
Detective Club
Players: 4-8
Playing time: 45mins
Ready to flex your mind muscles?
Detective Club is a party game in the same vein as Dixit, but with a little twist. Players will be given a word and play 2 cards that closest resemble that word. The twist is that 1 player doesn’t know the word and will have to bluff through their explanation.
The artwork feels like a surreal dreamscape with all kinds of odd and beautiful imagery. It’s one of those games that you’ll play without keeping score simply because it’s so fun and engaging.
It plays especially well with larger groups and maxes out at 8 players. Although I’m sure if you tried, you could jury-rig your own components to add more players.
What we liked
The cards are brilliant, allowing for fun and creative storytelling opportunities. Detective Club is a fantastic party game that plays much like A Fake Artist Goes to New York, although each player has to defend themselves, adding a juicy twist!
What could be better
Like many party and social deduction games, the fun of Detective Club really depends on the group of people you play with. Also, there can be a bit of downtime between turns which may be dull.
Sushi Go! Party
Players: 2-8
Playing time: 20mins
The immensely popular Sushi Go! Party is the ultimate pick-and-pass card game for a party.
Featuring a party platter of mega maki, super sashimi, and endless edamame, Sushi Go! Party awards you points for picking winning sushi combos, but you’ll also be able to customize each game by choosing a la carte dishes.
Sushi Go! Party has straightforward rules: pick a card to keep, then pass hands to the left. This is an excellent game for families or friends of up to 8 players as you can customize the difficulty level.
What we liked
Sushi Go Party! is a great game for groups. It’s simple enough that everyone can learn to play quickly and it’s adorable so it’s suited for kids as well as adults.
What could be better
The added variation of scoring cards can get cumbersome when setting up the game with larger number of players.
Eldritch Horror
Players: 1-8
Playing time: 120-240mins
The world stands on the brink of catastrophe. It falls to you to explore what lurks in the shadows.
It’s 1926 and strange cults and monsters have awakened to wreak havoc on every continent, opening gates to bizarre other worlds. Only a few brave investigators from all walks of life can come together, using their skills and weaponry against the Ancient Ones.
Eldritch Horror is a cooperative game based on H.P Lovecraft’s fiction. You and your fellow investigators will be fighting monsters, traveling to other worlds, and solving unspeakable mysteries. Beware; your efforts to save humanity may drain you of your sanity.
Eldritch Horror has high replayability with four Ancient Ones, twelve investigators, and hundreds of possible encounters, all leading to an epic adventure.
What we liked
With the maximum amount of players, Eldritch Horror feels EPIC. It becomes a massive worldwide search for clues and you can really feel the pressure.
What could be better
If all the players aren’t focused it can quickly get out of hand with long periods of downtime between turns.
Board Games For 9-10 Players
Dixit Odyssey
Players: 3-12
Playing time: 30mins
Voyage to a new dream in the fantastic universe of Dixit.
Dixit Odyssey is both a standalone game and an expansion for Dixit. In this board game, you’ll discover 84 new illustrations by Piero and Marie Cardouat. Continue the adventure to delightful and enchanting new worlds.
In Dixit Odyssey, players can choose whimsical, dreamlike art to match the storyteller’s tale. You’ll then try to see if you can find the storyteller’s card among all card options. You’ll need to stretch your imagination muscles to rediscover the Dixit universe and explore new magical worlds.
What we liked
One of the great things about Dixit is that it can be played in any language. It relies solely on images for gameplay which makes it very universal and easy for players to jump into.
What could be better
There can be times when Dixit Odyssey can seem too long or drag on.
The Resistance: Avalon
The Resistance: Avalon is a social deduction game that pits the forces of good and evil in a war to lead the future of Camelot. King Arthur represents the future of Britain. He promises prosperity and honor, yet, hidden among his brave soldiers, are Mordred’s nefarious minions.
The forces of evil are aware of one another, and only Merlin, Arthur’s servant, knows the agents of evil. Merlin, however, can only speak in riddles. If his true identity is discovered, all will be lost. Players will take on the roles of the Knights of the Round Table and complete quests for Arthur.
Quests, secret votes, and sabotage will (hopefully) reveal the traitors.
What we liked
I’m a huge fan of the Resistance games. They’re one of the quintessential hidden traitors that innovated off the Werewolf system. There are always a lot of table conversations which makes it great for larger groups of people.
What could be better
With larger groups of players, suspicions spread quickly and some members might have nothing to do other than argue their case.
Welcome To…
Players: 10
Playing time: 25mins
Welcome to… your perfect home.
As an architect, you’ll be working to build the best new town in 1950s America by adding pools, and parks and hiring employees. Players will flip cards from three piles to make three different action sets.
Take action to increase the point value of the estates you build. While building your estate, all players are racing to be the first to complete public goals.
If you’ve dreamt of becoming an architect, Welcome To… will let you live out your architectural dreams!
What we liked
Welcome to… is a really simple roll-and-write that rewards planning and strategy. There is some luck involved, but there are only a few games out there that claim to accommodate 100 players.
What could be better
There’s not a lot of player interaction. It can seem like you’re playing by yourself at times, and that’s a little weird when you have 8-10 players.
When I Dream
Players: 4-10
Playing time: 20-40mins
Put on your sleep mask, and try to figure out your dreams!
In When I Dream, players take turns as the Dreamer, placing a mask over their eyes. The rest of the players are Dream Spirits, using single words to describe the same card. Not all is enchanting in dreamland, however. There are Sandmen and Boogeymen that’ll try to lead the Dreamer astray.
What we liked
This is an excellent communication game for all ages, and each role you play is challenging and entertaining to keep all players engaged.
When I Dream’s unique mechanic of blinding a player to describe a dream is really cool and isn’t seen in many other games.
What could be better
When I Dream can be a bit hectic. There is a timed element that may stress some players out more than other games on this list.
Deception: Murder in Hong Kong
Players: 4-12
Playing time: 20mins
Who among you can see through the lies?
Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is a fast-paced murder mystery game of whodunnit. Players find themselves in a scenario of murder, deduction, and deception. One player is the murderer who secretly chooses what evidence to leave behind.
Another player is the forensic scientist, integral to convicting the murderer but they can only express their knowledge through analysis of the scene. The rest of the players are investigators, interpreting the clues.
You’ll need to have your wits about you to identify the murder correctly, or they could point the investigation toward you…
What we liked
Deception takes the tried and true hidden traitor mechanics and turns them into something unique. The theme and new gameplay elements make it something truly special.
What could be better
To get the most out of Deception a larger group of players is necessary. It can be played with fewer, but like most hidden traitor games more players equals more fun.
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Players: 3-10
Playing time: 10mins
You’ll have the course of only one night to determine who are the werewolves among you.
One Night Ultimate Werewolf is a social deduction board game that comes with a free app. At the start of the game, each player is given a card, which they’ll secretly view, giving them a unique power to help the Villager or Werewolf team.
Press the button on the app and learn about the night phase. Players then have time to discuss what happened at night and discover who the werewolves are.
If you’re looking for a fast-paced party game, One Night Ultimate Werewolf is perfect for groups of board game lovers or beginners.
What we liked
Werewolf is one of the first popularized hidden traitor games. It’s simple and easily a crowd-pleaser with larger groups of players.
What could be better
Even with the special abilities and larger variants, it can get a little stale after awhile.
