What we liked

This game has a number of different strategies to try out. As it can be played as a solo game, plan your strategies before game night!

Caverna is everything I like about Agricola, but better.

What could be better

The learning curve isn’t as steep as in Agricola, but new players may still want to start out with a less complex Euro before diving into Caverna.

Decrypto

Try to transmit secret codes without letting the opposing team intercept them. 

Decrypto is a fun party game that has many clever components to scramble the codes. By sliding cards into the screen you’ll eventually be able to decode the words! Coded messages could be something like, ‘pig’, ‘candy’, ‘son’ and ‘tent’.

One member of the team must use similar words and hope their teammates guess the original code correctly. A second round takes the game a step further by matching words with numbers. 

Played with two teams, a strong interaction between players is needed and there’s no downtime between turns, making for fast-paced play, and keeping everyone entertained. 

What we liked

Decrypto offers some of the best wordplay gameplay in a board game. The fun aesthetic of floppy disks and red filters gives it a vintage feel too.

What could be better

The initial learning curve of the rules can be difficult. It’s a great game, but explaining it isn’t easy.

By drafting cards, there is no downtime as you have to keep an eye on your neighbors. As they say, ‘keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer. But if you make wise decisions, you’ll be leading your civilization to prosperity. 

Divided into three ages, all played similarly, players are given multiple chances to develop their city. Draw cards and ensure you’ve got some top-notch military strength. 7 Wonders has been a favorite in the civilization-building genre, and it’s no wonder, you’ll have a blast playing it.

What we liked

7 Wonders does an amazing job of recreating a civilization simulator. It offers tons of strategy and replayability and is perfect for any fan of history.

What could be better

It’s not as comprehensive as some civilization games. If you’re looking to manage economics and the nitty gritty parts of civilization, you’ll want to check out Through the Ages or some of the more in-depth civilization games.

Mysterium is a cooperative game, great for larger groups. Work together to investigate a haunted mansion. Killed years before, a ghost haunts the manor.

Learning that the ghoul died under mysterious circumstances, psychics decide to gather information about what happened to the unfortunate victim. Visions from the ghost will lead you to the truth.

One player takes on the role of the victim, the rest solving the mystery, or at least trying to. Deduction skills, as well as interpreting clues, are very important to determine, a killer, a location, and a weapon.

The player who takes on the ghost will have fun leading visions while psychics work together to find the guilty culprit. As a team, can you solve the case? Or will the criminal pull off the perfect murder?

What we liked

Mysterium’s clue-based gameplay is unique compared to others of the genre.

What makes Mysterium a great game for 7 players is that each player must investigate a case assigned to them. Then everyone comes together to determine the circumstances of the murder.

What could be better

If you’re not a fan of clue-based games or have no idea who you’re playing with, Mysterium can play as a very frustrating Dixit. If you’re not a fan of Dixit, chances are, you won’t be a fan of Mysterium

Citadels

Build a medieval city fit for a king! 

With the kingdom in need of a Master Builder, players must impress the monarchy by building the ‘most majestic medieval metropolis’.

With many different characters you’ll have to rely on, players need to bluff, and barter to build their ultimate city. Perhaps an architect to quickly build or a thief to pick other players’ pockets, the strategy you play is completely up to you. 

Citadels is a great card game with diverse characters that can change gameplay quickly. Each round, you’ll secretly choose one character and have to try to anticipate what moves your rivals will make.

What we liked

The constant shifting of roles makes for a highly strategic game, but there’s also a bit of luck thrown in the mix.

As special powers and different strategies change with each game, the replay value is very good.  A brilliant combination of strategy and luck makes Citadels a fantastic choice.

What could be better

The game can drag on longer than intended with larger players. This is especially true with new players that are not familiar with the rules.

Bluffing is needed to confuse and mislead while investigators will need their deduction skills to assure the killer won’t get away with murder. 

A crime, an investigation, and cracking the case all come together to make this a fun game of mystery for small parties. 

What we liked

Deception plays around with the tried and true Hidden Traitor mechanics and adds another layer of tension and mistrust to the players.

What could be better

With larger numbers of players, it can sometimes seem like it drags on. It’s often hard to keep a big group on-task, but if everyone’s involved and participating, it should be just fine.

The three different difficulty levels and fast-paced play give this game an edge for the versatility it brings. Concept is a really fun game for the whole family to play. With easy rules, this is a perfect and engaging game for groups of 7 of all ages.

What we liked

Concept is great for non-gamers. Its simple mechanics that rely on wordplay is easy and compelling enough for most people, regardless of their tabletop experience.

What could be better

Some of the concepts chosen can be pretty tricky and as with most games like this, the fun factor depends largely on who you’re playing with.

Camel Up is a fun game of racing camels around a pyramid. As top betters, you’ll have to figure out which camel will place first and second.

The art of betting comes in with the timing of your bet. The earlier you place it, the higher your return. The balance between taking a chance early and waiting all depends on your guess.

As camels aren’t the most graceful of creatures, by choice of the dice, they can fumble, fall, and be carried over the finishing line. With dice showing one by one you’ll have to track your bets with each roll.

What we liked

The components, pyramid, and silly camels, are all hilarious and make for a fun family game. This is a really fun, no-stress group game that’ll have players keeping a watchful eye on the camels and their money!

What could be better

There’s a lot of luck involved in Camel Up, but that’s also the point of betting games…
