Fun Party Games for Adults Without Drinking

#1. Just One

Just One Board Game Box and Components

Players: 3-7
Playing time: 20 minutes

Just One is a cooperative word association game. Think Heads Up or Taboo but without the impulsive yelling!

One player will be the guesser, and the rest of the team will provide one-word clues. If the word is mountain, players may give the clues hiking, peak, or Everest. Repeated clues are automatically eliminated. You’ll need to think of unique hints without being too abstract.

How many guesses does the player get? Just One! So make sure to provide as many helpful clues as you can. Your team gets 13 chances. The more correct answers, the merrier. The aim is to get all 13 words, but as long as you have fun, you can call it a success!

Just One is about knowing your audience. Be clever and cooperative to get those guesses right!

#2. Codenames

Codenames Board Game Box and Game Components

Players: 2-8
Playing time: 15 minutes

Codenames is a word game with a twist. It divides the party into two teams to add some lighthearted competition.

These two teams of spies are working against each other to guess a set of words. Vocabulary cards are set up in a 5×5 grid. One clue master from each side can see the keycard with their designated words. Get your teammates to guess your set of vocab cards by giving one-word clues. If your target words are apple, turkey, and family, you might provide the hint Thanksgiving

It sounds easy enough, but you’ll need to think creatively to avoid your opponents’ words. It’s a race to guess all your cards first. But if your team guesses the death card – it’s game over for all!

  • A perfect party game experience for game nights
  • 2-8+ player (in two teams)

#3. Decrypto

Decrypto Board Game Logo and Art

Players: 3-8
Playing time: 15-45 minutes

You’ll need all your focus to decrypt this hidden code!

In Decrypto, two teams have a series of words visible to only them. Let’s say your words are tomato, cat, house, and vase. Team members take turns picking cards with numbered codes on them. Try to get your teammates to guess the code using one-word clues.

For example, if your code is 4-1-2, you could say flower-red-paw. Correct guesses move you to the next round, while incorrect ones give you one black mark. Reveal just the right amount with those clues– if the opposing team can connect the vocabulary well enough to guess your code, they get a white mark.

Two white marks are a win, just as two black marks are a loss. So stay cryptic with those clues to keep your codes a mystery!

#4. The Resistance: Avalon

The Resistance Avalon Board Game Box and Components

Players: 5-10
Playing time: 30 minutes

The Resistance: Avalon pits two teams against each other, King Arthur’s Loyal Servants and Mordrid’s Minions – or good versus evil.

Party goers will randomly get a role on either team. You might be the mysterious Merlin and know the identities of Minions, or be the Assassin waiting to expose a player’s role.

In Avalon, good guys want to pass missions in hopes of securing their kingdom’s future. Every turn, players choose a group to go on a mission. That group secretly votes whether to pass or fail the assignment.

Observation is key in this social deduction game. If you’re a good guy, you’ll want to guide the observant players to victory. But if you’re evil, you may want to throw suspicion off yourself by exploiting others.

Will good or evil prevail? Divide the party and let the mind games begin.

Players: 5-10
Playing time: 20 minutes

It’s Pictionary-meets-Werewolf in this party game.

A Fake Artist Goes to New York doesn’t require any artistic ability – fake is in the title for a reason! It doesn’t matter if you have a drawing talent or if you struggle to sketch stick figures, you’re sure to have fun.

The Question Master decides a word for everyone to draw. They distribute the word to each player but secretly replace it with an X for one person. Players all draw one stroke at a time, observing each others’ pictures and determining the Fake Artists amongst them.

Can you uncover the fraud? Or will they get away with their scam? Put pencil to paper to find out!

#6. Wavelength

Players: 2-12
Playing time: 30-45 minutes

Get on the Same Wavelength as your guests!

In Wavelength, two teams battle to get on the same page — or as close as possible. A target hides on a spectrum. Using two opposing words, the clue master must help their team get as close as possible.

Let’s say the words are forbidden and encouraged. The clue master must suggest an idea in the same target region. If the target is just slightly to the left, or the forbidden side, they could say, “Cheating on a quiz.” The teammates see it as wrong but not wildly forbidden by their standards, and guess close. The closer to the target, the higher the score.

Wavelength is simple to learn and well-structured. However, it leaves just enough space for guests to get creative and a bit silly with their suggestions. So get in the minds of your guests to score big!

  • Party game for the whole family up to 12 players

Fascists and liberals are vying for political power in 1930s Germany. The liberals may have the majority, but the fascists run a covert mission. With sneaky tactics and deception skills, they may take over.

In Secret Hitler, players take turns being President and electing a Chancellor. The group votes on whether to pass or deny the duo’s agenda. Be skeptical of others as you determine if they’re a reliable pair.

When in power, you can move your agenda forward as a liberal or fascist. If you are the Secret Hitler, throwing others off your scent early could work to your advantage later in the game. It’s about hidden tactics and deduction to move your team ahead.

Whichever group can pass enough agendas first, claims victory!

Dixit is a creative storytelling and guessing game. Players get six cards with colorful images. Pulling from one of their pictures, the active player presents a description that portrays the image. It can be a poem, song, movie, sentence, or even a noise.

Secretly play a card you think best resembles this description. Then, vote on another player’s card that best captures the meaning. If the active player gets all the votes or no votes, they get zero points. But if at least one player voted for the active player’s card, they get 3 points each.

Points are also awarded for votes – so play to your audience! The first player to 30 points wins the game.

Dixit is similar to Cards Against Humanity but much more wholesome and picture-based. The open-ended description allows for a more creative and playful dynamic, and the group voting ensures that everybody is engaged no matter whose turn it is.

Using the other players’ letters, create a word. For example, if the other players have the letters U-P-R-L-E, your word could be PURPLE. Let’s say one player has the R. They’ll know the word is PU?PLE. It’s up to them to identify the missing letter!

The goal is for all players to uncover their six-letter cards – and hopefully make a new word from it. If everyone can accomplish this task, you’ve won!
