5 Games Like Blokus

Blokus is a classic family game, which requires a sharp degree of strategy while shifting around transparent, Tetris-shaped, colored components.

The goal of this abstract game is for each player to fit as many of their 21 pieces on the board as possible while ensuring to not place their pieces adjacent to ones already placed, but that they must touch at least a corner. A solitaire version exists, whereby a player attempts to use all pieces in a single sitting.

Blokus is a challenge for those who enjoy using their tactical skills to protect their territory by squeezing in as many pieces as possible and ruthlessly blocking their opponents! If it’s up your street, let’s have a look at some other games bearing noticeable similarities.

Cathedral

Players: 2
Playing time: 20 mins

Cathedral follows a comparable formula to Blokus, in the sense that it is all about building and owning your territory. This 2 player game sees both players begin with a set of different colored pieces in the shapes of buildings.

Player one places the neutral Cathedral piece on the board while they will then alternate turns by placing one of their buildings onto the board until it is impossible to add more. They are able to capture territory by surrounding areas that are occupied by an opponent or neutral building.

The winner is the player with the fewest square units of building by the end. Like Blokus, this type of exercise is excellent for developing strategic thinking and as it is only a 2-player match, it can be enjoyable to go for a few friendly rounds.

Patchwork

Patchwork Board Game Box and Board

Players: 2
Playing time: 15-30 mins

As with Blokus, Patchwork is another game focused on construction, strategy, and a dash of imagination.

In Patchwork, two players compete to build an aesthetically-pleasing patchwork quilt on their personal 9×9 game boards with brightly-colored pieces of cloth. Players must lay out all random patches in a circle and place a marker clockwise of the 2-1 patch. The currency used for the game is buttons, so both players receive 5 each.

On each turn, a player can buy one of the three patches standing clockwise from the spool or pass. There are many more rules and twists in Patchwork compared to Blokus but ultimately the end goal is similar and you’re likely to enjoy it the more times you play.

Underwater Cities

Underwater Cities Board Game Box and Components

Players: 1-4
Playing time: 80-150 mins

In stark contrast to fast, fun, and furious games, Underwater Cities takes around 30-45 minutes per player, so definitely a competition to put some time aside for.

Similar to Blokus, there is a focus on colors, but this time it is solely on cards that are placed along the edges of the main board in 3 x 5 slots. This fantasy-based game sees each player tasked with placing the cards in matching colored slots.

Much like Blokus, and other games mentioned, there is a goal to build, and upgrade cities and tunnels, but this time it is on the ocean bed.

In a game of over 200 cards which are divided into five different types, it’s a long and imaginative challenge with the principal strategy being about card placement. And the most exciting part of it all? Everything is built underwater!

Drop It

Players: 2-4
Playing time: 30 mins

Drop It is a game that allows options of different versions according to complexity. Players are required to drop a variety of shapes into a vertical game board and points are scored if your piece touches the highest level.

However, if your piece touches anything of the same shape or color, then you score zero! It may sound simple enough but the circles, triangles, squares, and diamonds bounce around, meaning it isn’t as easy as it looks.

As with Blokus, Drop It is about colors, shapes, and progression, and a perfect fun challenge for all ages.

Tsuro

Tsuro Board Game box and components

Players: 2-8
Playing time: 15-20 mins

Tsuro is an Asian-inspired game consisting of tiles that display twisted lines, a 6×6 grid on which to lay them, and a token for each player.

The objective is to keep your token on the board longer than your opponents, but as the board fills up this becomes increasingly more difficult because the empty spaces diminish. As with Blokus, Tsuro is objectively an abstract game that focuses highly on smart methodical moves to stay in play.

The aim is to be the final player with a token on the board, meaning you must drive other players into one another or off the board, and at the same time create your own route in directions that will disrupt and distract your opponents. It’s a short game but one that is optimal for extending concentration spans.
